National Signing Day
National signing day marked a significant milestone for two seniors at Eastern Mennonite School, Sarah Drooger and Ryan Slonaker. After many years of hard work and passion for their respective sports this accomplishment for both reflects a blend of skill and determination. Both Sarah and Ryan stand as inspiring examples of student athletes, making significant strides in collegiate sports.
Sarah Drooger signed to play soccer at Virginia Commonwealth University, a NCAA division 1 school. This achievement not only showcases her prowess on the soccer field but also highlights her commitment to academic and athletic excellence. “I’m just so thankful for everyone and everything they’ve done in my life,” Drooger said. “It was great to see everybody here.” Sarah mentioned the importance that EMHS head soccer coach Andrew Gascho and EMHS assistant/goalkeeper coach Matt Overacker had on her years playing for EMS. She shared that they motivated her and pushed her to work on her leadership as well.
Ryan Slonaker secured a spot on the golf team at Virginia Tech (VT), also a NCAA Division 1 school. His signing underscores his talent and hard work in golf, aligning with VT’s competitive sports program. VT has been a family tradition in many ways. Ryan said his parents attended VT as well as his uncle. Over the years they have spent many hours rooting for the Hokies teams. Ryan is excited to be joining the golf team and continue the family tradition.
Ryan is a Five-year letter-winner at Eastern Mennonite School. Three-time individual state champion (2021-23) and Led EMS to the team state title in 2022. Ryan has been ranked inside the top 100 nationally and No. 3 in Virginia for the class of 2024 by Junior Golf Scoreboard.
