Teaching in the Eastern Mennonite Tradition
Teachers at Eastern Mennonite School possess unique qualities that enhance the academic environment and student development. Over the course of the academic year, one can observe EMS teachers practicing:
Authenticity and Vulnerability
Our teachers understand the power of vulnerability and authenticity in building strong relationships with students. They are not afraid to share their personal experiences, including successes and challenges. By being open and genuine, teachers create a safe and trusting space where students feel empowered to express themselves and take risks in their learning journey. For example, Ms. Anderson’s encouragement of embracing mistakes as opportunities for growth resonates with students and promotes a culture of active learning. Say it with me, “Mistakes are awesome!”
Encouraging Healthy Disagreement
Another noteworthy quality of our teachers is their promotion of healthy disagreement among students. Recognizing the value of constructive conflict, educators encourage students to express differing opinions respectfully. By guiding students in engaging in meaningful debates and interventions when necessary, teachers foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Mr. Hershberger’s approach of facilitating Socratic circles equips students with valuable communication skills that extend beyond the classroom.
Facilitating Community
Our teachers prioritize the creation of a supportive community where every student feels valued and included. They invest time and effort in nurturing a sense of belonging, which is essential for effective learning. This commitment to building a strong community enhances students’ overall learning experience and fosters a sense of unity. Our “Bigs and Littles” program pairs an HS older student with a younger MS student so they can shepherd them through the school, be a listening ear, and help them navigate the wonderful world of middle school.
Commitment to Lifelong Learning
Despite their expertise, our teachers embody a growth mindset by prioritizing continuous learning. They actively seek out opportunities to enhance their teaching practices and expand their knowledge base. By demonstrating a dedication to lifelong learning, educators set a positive example for students, emphasizing the importance of ongoing education as a lifelong journey. All of our principals, and many of our teachers have been earning a five class Restorative Justice in Education certificate through Eastern Mennonite University so we can further our commitments to restorative processes.
Advocacy and Accountability
Our teachers advocate for accountability and integrity within the school community. They are not afraid to address behaviors or practices that do not align with the school’s values, holding themselves and others to high standards. By embracing change and striving for continuous improvement, educators create an environment where everyone is encouraged to learn and grow together. Last year, teachers led and administrators, staff, alumni, and our board affirmed a statement of belonging which helps us orient and direct our mission and vision in our context. This commitment is to growth as we continue to learn from and love our community well.
EMS teachers embody authenticity, constructive dialogue, community development, continuous learning, and advocacy, fostering a dynamic and supportive educational environment that aligns with the school’s mission, vision, and faith practices.
