Traditions at Home: A Heartfelt Homecoming
Homecoming 2024 at Eastern Mennonite School was nothing short of spectacular, bringing together alumni from across the United States and even from overseas. The event’s joyous reunion with perfect fall weather reinforced our school’s strong traditions and fostered a deep sense of belonging for alumni and families.
Warmth and camaraderie infused the activities as attendees gathered to share meals, sing songs, cheer on sports teams, tour the school, listen to great music, marvel at their photos on the walls, and most of all, recount cherished memories throughout the evening and into the night.
This year we marked the celebrations of alumni from graduating classes ending in 4 and 9. During the festivities, three alumni were honored for their incredible vision and contributions to education ministry, art, and the environment: H. Michael Shenk ’49, Ashley Souder ’99 Miller, and James Souder ’09. Their inspiring stories were shared during classes, the chapel service, and at the annual breakfast.
Even as our alumni continue to inspire, Eastern Mennonite School continues to shape students, encouraging them to make a difference and pursue their goals sometimes in very counter-cultural ways. This homecoming theme of traditions served as a reminder of the impact that shared experiences can have, inspiring others to lead meaningful lives that contribute positively to the world.
One new addition to remember our past and inspire the next generation is the launch of an online exhibit of the history of choirs at Eastern Mennonite School. Additional photographs and edits are welcome! View the display at easternmennonite.org/touring-choir-history
Looking ahead, the excitement for next year’s homecoming is already building. Alumni are encouraged to mark their calendars for the third weekend in October, the 18th and 19th and nominate fellow graduates to be celebrated in 2025. By sharing stories and honoring one another, the Eastern Mennonite School community continues to strengthen its ties and inspire future generations.
