Faith Leaders Brunch
Faith Leaders Brunch

Eastern Mennonite School recently held a successful Faith Leaders Brunch that brought together educators, students, and faith leaders from the local religious communities. The purpose of the brunch was to cultivate and enhance partnerships with synagogues, churches, and mosques that are attended by EMS students. While many of our students attend Mennonite or Christian churches. A number of our students also attend other faith communities. At the core of EMS, a Mennonite Anabaptist school, is a dedication to the teachings of Jesus, while also embracing diversity and the complexity of faith, welcoming individuals from different spiritual traditions with open arms. The school aims to be a place where all students, regardless of where they are on their spiritual journeys, can experience a sense of belonging.

EMS firmly upholds Mennonite values, which include living out the teachings of Jesus, peacemaking, and service (the largest student organization on campus is the “WeServe” club). These values are not only taught but actively practiced within the school community, extending to both local and global spheres. Understanding and assisting others is a fundamental aspect of peacemaking, a theme that resonated throughout the brunch.

Paul Leaman, Head of School, highlighted the school’s role in faith development, stating, “We’re part of student faith formation while they’re here; the church is faith formation for life.”

The brunch featured guided table discussions focused on this year’s school theme: “What do you watch for? What do you wait for? What do you wonder about?” These conversations were helpful to EMS staff and faculty to learn from students and their faith leaders. While the discussions varied, one clear message emerged: we desire to be in community together. EMS is considering the formation of a faith leaders advisory group as a result of these discussions.

EMS provides K-12 courses that explore the Bible and the stories of Jesus. A common inquiry within our school is about faith formation and the prerequisites for Bible classes.

EMES Offerings Include:

  • Peacebuilding Program: Integrates Jesus’ stories and supports teachings from students’ home communities of faith including Encounter Curriculum lessons
  • Weekly Gatherings: Students sing, hear Jesus’ stories, and share their faith experiences.

EMS is a learning community where students are encouraged to deepen their faith and understanding, supported by both the school and their places of worship. The Faith Leaders Brunch was a tremendous success, and we look forward to sharing many more experiences with our faith communities, fostering an environment of learning, respect, and shared growth!
